Preparing Your Home for Vacation
It’s the time of year that many residents in our community are starting to plan a winter holiday and many neighbours and friends are also packing up and heading to sunny destinations to escape the cold season ahead. Going on vacation is very exciting but getting ready to leave can be super stressful. On top of making sure all your travel arrangements are in order, you also must worry about what to do with your house while you are gone.
Preparing your house helps keep it safe so that you can have peace of mind as you travel and it’s essential that you take time to ensure your home is secure. Here are some steps you can take to prepare your house for vacation.
Lock Up!
Lock any external doors, windows, and your garage. If you have a security system – make sure it’s working.
Clean out your fridge
Since you won’t be home for a while, you will want to clean out your fridge and remove any foods that will spoil while you’re gone. This is also a great time to wipe down all the surfaces and throw away any condiments or other items that have expired.
Prepare your home for the weather
There’s no way to know for sure what type of weather your home will experience while you’re gone. Be sure to prepare your home to reduce the risk of weather-related damage. If you have patio furniture outside that is subjected to the elements or anything loose in your yard that could move with heavy winds or rain, put it inside your garage or shed to keep it secure.
Take care of your mail delivery
Whether your mail is placed on hold, forwarded or you have asked a neighbor to pick it up, you’ll want to make sure that your mail is taken care of. Make sure you do the same thing for deliveries and put any newspaper subscriptions on hold.
Clean your home
It’s a much more pleasant experience to come home to a clean and de-cluttered house after your time away.
Use this as a quick cleaning checklist:
- Empty your dishwasher and leave the door open so the water dissipates.
- Make sure there are no clothes in the washer or dryer.
- Wipe down your countertops and clean the stovetop to avoid attracting any bugs or rodents in your absence.
- Take out the trash before you leave.
Indoor maintenance.
Check your smoke alarm and make sure it has brand new batteries. To put your mind at ease, go around and do last minute checks on all of your doors and windows.
Turn off the water in your house
When you are home, you are able to take action and avoid damage. However, when you’re away, a plumbing leak can really wreak havoc on your home. Locate the main water shut-off valve, and turn it off before you leave. After you turn it off, turn on your kitchen and bathroom faucets until they run dry.
Unplug most appliances
Ongoing or rapid power outages can impact and damage appliances in your home, including your computer and television. Right before you leave for vacation, go around your home and unplug anything that doesn’t need to be on like toasters, cable boxes, televisions, kitchen appliances, and anything else you won’t be using.
Adjust your thermostat. Do not turn off the heat!
Set your thermostat between 55 and 60 degrees. If the house temperature is too low, your water pipes could freeze.
As you take the necessary precautions to prepare your home while you’re on vacation, remember to give yourself enough time to prepare and finish these tasks. I hope you find these tips helpful and wherever you may be headed this winter, I hope you enjoy your time away, and I wish you safe travels.
